Protest against CAA in Assam, petition filed in Supreme Court, AASU takes out torch march in Guwahati

After the implementation of CAA, protests have started in different corners of India. After filing a petition against CAA in the Supreme Court on Tuesday, All Assam Students Union took out a torch march in Guwahati. Speaking to Aaj Tak, AASU advisor Samujjal Bhattacharya said, “CAA is an unconstitutional, anti-North-East, anti-Assam act.”

He said that after five years of violent protests in Assam, the Assam Accord was signed in 1985 during the Rajiv Gandhi government of Congress. According to other 30 organizations opposing CAA, it is a violation of the Assam Accord. We filed our first case in the Supreme Court challenging the CAA. We have full faith in the law and will protest peacefully. Assam is not a dumping ground for migrants. We want to live as good citizens like other parts of the country.”

At the same time, AASU President Utpal Sarma also attacked the central government. He said, “We have always taken a stand against the CAA. In the apex court we sought a stay on the CAA. We have already borne the burden of illegal migrants in Assam. According to the Assam Accord, the deportation year was fixed at 1971 and Now it is 2014 according to CAA. We will continue our protest against CAA, our struggle will continue until it ends. We migrants cannot bear the additional burden anymore.”
