11 candidates including Foreign Minister Jaishankar and Derek O’Brien will be elected unopposed to Rajya Sabha

Eleven candidates will be elected unopposed in the Rajya Sabha elections to be held this month, including External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Trinamool Congress’s Derek O’Brien are included. Out of 11 candidates, 6 are from TMC and five from BJP. With this, BJP has won one more seat in Rajya Sabha, it has 93 members.

Voting was to be held for 11 seats on July 24

On July 24, voting was to be held on 6 Rajya Sabha seats in West Bengal, three in Gujarat and one in Goa, but now voting will not take place. Three TMC candidates and five BJP candidates will be elected unopposed. Apart from Derek O’Brien, TMC leaders who were elected unopposed include Sukhendu Shekhar Roy, Dola Sen, Saket Gokhale, Sameerul Islam and Prakash Barik. Now the total seats of BJP and allies in the Upper House has increased to 105, while one seat of Congress has decreased.

Jaishankar elected to Rajya Sabha for the second time

Of the three Rajya Sabha seats in Gujarat whose term is ending next month, BJP had fielded former MLAs Babu Bhai Desai and Kesridev Singh Jhala on two and S Jaishankar was the candidate on one seat. Due to no candidate from the opposition, all the three candidates have won unopposed.
