India has decided to allow rice export in view of its special relationship with Singapore. Last month, India announced a ban on the export of all non-basmati rice, following which rice prices in the world increased. Foreign Ministry spokesman Arindam Bagchi said that a formal order allowing rice exports to Singapore would be issued soon.

Along with this, Arindam Bagchi said that India and Singapore have close economic relations and there is a strong bond between the two countries. He further informed that considering the special relationship between the two countries, India has decided to allow rice exports to meet the food security requirements of Singapore.

Rice was demanded in June :

Let us tell you that India is the largest rice exporter in the world. India accounted for about 40 per cent of Singapore’s rice imports last year. Earlier, Singapore, Indonesia and the Philippines had appealed to re-export. And in June 2023, Singapore had asked for 1 lakh 10 thousand tonnes of rice from India. Indonesia had demanded 1 million tonnes of rice from India.

Singapore was in touch with India :

Explain that in July, India banned the export of non-basmati rice to increase domestic supply and keep retail prices under control. For the past few months, Singapore was negotiating with India to get exemption from the ban on rice exports. Recently, the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) had said in its statement that it is working to increase the import of different varieties of rice from different sources. Along with this, it was said that Singapore is in contact with the Indian authorities for this.
