Indian-origin Tharman Shanmugaratnam has been elected as the 9th President of Singapore

Singapore-born Indian-origin economist Tharman Shanmugaratnam won the presidential election on Friday (September 1). He defeated two rivals of Chinese origin in the presidential elections held for the first time since 2011. Shanmugaratnam has been associated with the People’s Action Party (PAP) for more than 20 years.

66-year-old Shanmugaratnam was the Deputy Prime Minister of Singapore from 2011 to 2019. He got a total of 70.4 percent votes in the presidential election while his rivals N. Kok Song and Tan Kin Lian got 15.7 percent and 13.8 percent votes respectively. A spokesperson of the Election Commission gave this information. Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong congratulated Shanmugaratnam on winning the presidential election.

Before becoming the President, he also worked as the Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister of the country. His policy making skills are amazing. They have four children. The names of their children are Maya, Akash, Krishna and Arjun. Tharman Shanmugaratnam’s children have followed in the footsteps of their parents. The eldest child Maya is a social entrepreneur and lawyer, while the second child Akash is a software engineer. On the other hand, two younger siblings, Krishna and Arjun, are students of Economics, Politics and Music, Arts respectively.
