On the anniversary of Emergency, RSS-inspired magazine Panchjanya has compared former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi with German dictator Hitler.

The magazine has put a picture of Hitler and Indira Gandhi on the cover page of its new issue and named it ‘Hitler Gandhi’.

Panchjanya wrote on its cover page, “Two dictators, same text. Denying or forgetting Hitler’s heinous crimes is legal in many places in Europe. It is a question of survival for him. Same is the situation with Indira Gandhi in India. It is about Emergency, forgetting which can be dangerous for the existence of democracy. Come, remember the story that started from the black night of 25th June, 1975.

Apart from Panchjanya, senior BJP leaders including PM Modi have targeted the Congress by remembering the Emergency. PM Modi tweeted, “I pay tribute to all the courageous people who opposed the Emergency and worked to strengthen our democratic spirit. #DarkDaysOfEmergency is an unforgettable time in our history, which It is against our constitutional values that we are proud of.” BJP National President JP Nadda wrote, “On 25 June 1975, a family due to its dictatorial tendencies killed the great democracy of the country and imposed a stigma like Emergency. Whose ruthlessness left behind the tyranny of hundreds of years of foreign rule.” I bow down to all the patriots who struggled for the establishment of democracy in such difficult times by enduring immense tortures.” The party has also released a video of about seven minutes which has been made on the Emergency.

On June 25, 1975, the then Prime Minister of India Indira Gandhi had imposed emergency in the country, after which all the opposition leaders were arrested and put in jail and the media was banned. The day after the Emergency, only the Hindustan Times and the Statesman were able to publish because their printing presses were not on Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg. This happened because the government had cut off the electricity to the institutions on Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg. A few days before the Emergency, that is, on June 12, the Allahabad High Court canceled Indira Gandhi’s membership of Parliament.
